What to Expect During a Retinal Exam at Kenz Eye Care

A retinal examination is one of the most important parts of a comprehensive eye exam, yet many patients feel nervous about the process. Understanding what happens during the exam helps ease anxiety and ensures you get the most out of your visit.

Before the Exam

You will be asked to complete a brief medical history form including any medications, diabetes or blood pressure status, family history of eye disease, and current symptoms. Please bring your current glasses or contact lenses and a list of medications.

Initial Tests

Visual acuity testing measures how well you can see at various distances. Intraocular pressure measurement checks for glaucoma risk. Slit-lamp examination evaluates the front part of your eye including the cornea, iris, and lens.

The Dilated Retinal Exam

Your doctor will instill dilating eye drops that take 15 to 20 minutes to work. The drops temporarily enlarge your pupils so the entire retina can be examined. During this time, you may notice light sensitivity and temporary difficulty focusing up close.

Once dilated, the doctor uses a specialised instrument to view the back of your eye. This allows detailed examination of the retina, macula, optic nerve, and retinal blood vessels. The examination itself takes only a few minutes per eye.

Advanced Imaging When Needed

OCT scanning creates detailed cross-sections of the retinal layers. Fundus photography provides permanent images for comparison over time. Fluorescein angiography uses dye to highlight blood flow when vascular problems are suspected.

After the Exam

Your vision will remain blurred and light-sensitive for 4 to 6 hours after dilation. Bring sunglasses and avoid driving yourself home. Reading and computer work will be difficult during this period. Most patients return to normal vision by evening.
