What Is Macular Degeneration? A Complete Guide

Age-related macular degeneration, commonly called AMD, is a progressive eye disease that affects the macula — the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It is one of the leading causes of vision loss in people over 50 globally.

Understanding the Macula

The macula is a small area at the center of the retina packed with light-sensing cells called cones. It is responsible for the detailed central vision you use for reading, driving, recognising faces, and doing close work. Peripheral vision remains intact even in advanced AMD — but the central vision loss makes daily tasks extremely difficult.

Types of Macular Degeneration

Dry AMD is the more common form, affecting about 85 to 90 percent of patients. It develops slowly as the macular cells gradually deteriorate and tiny yellow deposits called drusen accumulate. Wet AMD is less common but more aggressive. Abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina and leak fluid or blood, causing rapid central vision loss if untreated.

Risk Factors

Age over 50 is the most significant risk factor. Family history substantially increases risk. Smoking doubles your risk of developing AMD. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and UV light exposure all contribute. Diet low in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids is associated with higher risk.

Early Warning Signs

Straight lines appearing wavy or bent is a classic early sign. A dark or empty spot in central vision can indicate progression. Difficulty reading even with your current glasses is often the first thing patients notice. Colors appearing less vivid is another early sign.

Treatment Options

Dry AMD has no cure, but high-dose antioxidant vitamins can slow progression. Wet AMD responds well to anti-VEGF injections which stop abnormal blood vessel growth. Some patients benefit from photodynamic therapy or laser treatment.

Protect Your Central Vision

If you are over 50, annual retinal exams with OCT imaging can detect AMD before significant vision loss. Kenz Eye Care in Kokapet offers comprehensive AMD screening and treatment. Call 93927 01759 to book your evaluation.
