5 Signs Your Child Needs Glasses (and How It Affects School Performance)

Studies show that up to 80 percent of what children learn in school is through visual processing. When a child cannot see the board clearly or struggles to focus on their textbook, the impact on academic performance can be significant, yet the real cause often goes undiagnosed.

Five Warning Signs

The first sign is squinting or closing one eye. Squinting temporarily improves focus by changing the shape of the eye, creating a pinhole effect. If your child squints frequently, it likely indicates a refractive error. The second sign is sitting too close. If your child consistently sits very close to the TV, holds tablets at nose distance, or leans forward in class to see the board, nearsightedness may be the cause.

The third sign is frequent headaches. Children with uncorrected vision problems often complain of headaches, especially after school or homework. The strain of trying to focus through blurred vision causes fatigue in the eye muscles. The fourth sign is using a finger while reading. While normal for beginning readers, older children who need to track with their finger may have a convergence or tracking issue.

The fifth sign is avoiding reading or close work. A child who resists homework but is otherwise intelligent may be struggling with a vision problem. Reading with uncorrected vision is physically uncomfortable, and children naturally avoid activities that cause discomfort.

What to Do

If you notice any of these signs, schedule a comprehensive eye exam rather than relying on school screening alone. School screenings typically only test distance vision and miss conditions like convergence insufficiency, astigmatism, and farsightedness.
