How Often Should Diabetics Get Eye Exams? A Hyderabad Guide

If you have diabetes, regular eye screening is one of the most effective ways to prevent vision loss. But how often do you really need to go? The answer depends on your type of diabetes, how long you have had it, your current eye health, and your blood sugar control.

Type 2 Diabetes

For adults newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, a comprehensive eye exam is recommended within the first few months. This is because Type 2 often goes undiagnosed for years, and retinal damage may already be present at the time of diagnosis. After the initial exam, annual follow-up is standard for patients with no retinopathy.

Type 1 Diabetes

Patients with Type 1 diabetes typically do not develop retinopathy in the first 5 years. The first screening is recommended 3 to 5 years after diagnosis, followed by annual exams.

Pregnant Women with Diabetes

Pregnancy can accelerate diabetic retinopathy. Pregnant women with pre-existing diabetes should have an eye exam in the first trimester and follow-up exams as recommended by their doctor. Gestational diabetes generally does not require eye exams during pregnancy.

If You Have Existing Retinopathy

Mild non-proliferative retinopathy may need follow-up every 6 to 12 months. Moderate to severe retinopathy may need exams every 3 to 4 months. Proliferative retinopathy or macular edema requires even more frequent monitoring and usually treatment.

Other Risk Factors That Warrant More Frequent Screening

Poor blood sugar control (HbA1c over 8%), long-standing diabetes (over 10 years), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and kidney disease all increase retinopathy risk and may warrant more frequent screening.
