Dry Eyes in Hyderabad: Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

Dry eye disease is one of the most common complaints we see at Kenz Eye Care, and Hyderabad's environment makes it particularly prevalent. The combination of air-conditioned offices, outdoor pollution, hot dry summers, and prolonged screen use creates the perfect storm for dry, irritated eyes.

What Causes Dry Eyes?

Your tears have three layers: an oily outer layer, a watery middle layer, and a mucin inner layer. Dry eye occurs when there is either insufficient tear production or excessive evaporation. Common causes include prolonged screen use where blink rate drops by up to 60 percent, air conditioning which reduces humidity, contact lens wear, certain medications like antihistamines and antidepressants, hormonal changes especially in women, and environmental factors like pollution and dust.

Symptoms Beyond Just Dryness

Paradoxically, watery eyes are actually a common symptom of dry eye disease. Other symptoms include a gritty or sandy sensation, burning or stinging, redness, blurred vision that improves with blinking, eye fatigue, and sensitivity to light.

Treatment Approach at Kenz Eye Care

We take a systematic approach to dry eye management. Mild cases may respond to preservative-free artificial tears and lifestyle modifications. Moderate cases may benefit from anti-inflammatory eye drops, warm compresses, and lid hygiene. Severe cases may require prescription medications, punctal plugs, or advanced treatments.

Prevention Tips for Hyderabad Residents

Follow the 20-20-20 rule during screen work. Use a humidifier in your AC room. Stay hydrated with 8 to 10 glasses of water daily. Wear wraparound sunglasses outdoors to block wind and dust. Take omega-3 supplements or eat more oily fish. Position your screen slightly below eye level.
