Blurry Vision: Common Causes and When to Worry

Blurry Vision: Common Causes and When to Worry

Blurry vision is one of the most common complaints that brings patients to our Kokapet clinic. The causes range from harmless — like needing a new prescription — to sight-threatening conditions requiring urgent intervention. Understanding the possible causes helps you recognise when to seek immediate care.

Refractive Errors

The most common cause of blurry vision is uncorrected refractive error. Myopia causes distant objects to appear blurry. Hyperopia causes difficulty with close work. Astigmatism distorts both near and distant vision. Presbyopia, the age-related loss of near focus, typically starts in the 40s. All of these are easily corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery.

Dry Eye Disease

Dry eyes cause fluctuating blurriness that improves with blinking. This is extremely common in Hyderabad due to air conditioning, dust, and screen use. Treatment ranges from artificial tears to prescription medications.

Cataracts

Cataracts cause gradual, painless blurring of vision, often with glare sensitivity and faded colours. Modern cataract surgery restores clear vision with excellent outcomes.

Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Edema

In diabetic patients, blood vessel damage in the retina causes fluctuating or progressive blurring. Macular edema — fluid buildup in the central retina — is a common cause of vision loss in diabetics and responds to anti-VEGF injections.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma typically affects peripheral vision first, but advanced disease can cause central blurring. This is why regular screening is critical.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

AMD causes blurring or distortion of central vision in people over 50. Early detection and treatment preserve more vision.

When Blurry Vision Is an Emergency

Sudden blurring in one or both eyes requires same-day evaluation. Blurring with eye pain, redness, or halos around lights suggests acute glaucoma. Blurring with a curtain or shadow in vision suggests retinal detachment. Blurring with sudden severe headache may indicate a stroke or other neurological emergency.
